Are you a bit freaked about the prospect of learning to use WordPress (either WordPress.org or WordPress.com) entirely on your own?
Or maybe you’ve tried it already and become frustrated with documentation that’s too technical, screencasts and videos that are boring or hard to follow, books and PDFs that are waaaaaay out of date, or instructors with, um, marginal people skills.
WordPress for Noobs (newbies) is an eight-week online course in which I teach you how to use the technical tools of the WordPress platform to Create content and to Administer your website… presented in a way that’s:
- flexible for your schedule
- adaptive to your learning style
- engaging
- cost-effective.
In this video, I explain a little bit about the course in a way that demonstrates why this introduction to WordPress course is different than anything else out there on the intertubes:
You’ll learn all about creating content, including:
- Drafting and publishing pages and blog posts, so that you can keep your site content fresh on your own, without the time delays and extra costs of a webmaster
- Assigning Categories and Tags, so that your content can be found more easily by site visitors and search engines
- Adding sidebar links and making links of words and phrases, which allows your visitors to go deeper, allows you to steer visitors to parts of your own site, encourages search engines to visit your site more often, and makes it more likely others will link to your site
- Inserting/embedding images, photos, and videos so that your content is more engaging, is visually compelling, and doesn’t require visitors to leave your site to view the media
You’ll learn all about administering your site, including:
- Navigating and customizing the Dashboard, so that you’re not distracted by clutter and can navigate faster to the areas you use the most
- Understanding the General Settings, which control most of the basic features you’ll need for your site
- Creating Users and assigning Roles, which allows you to control who’s able to do what on your site
- Selecting and modifying site appearance with Themes, which allows you to control the visual look and feel of the site
- Adding functionality with Plugins, which gives you the power to add many more features to your site
- Customizing Sidebars with Widgets, so that even with a standard theme, you can add and subtract features and content to your site that make it your own, no webmaster needed
- Customizing navigation Menus, so that as you add pages to your site, you can structure the navigation bar as you see fit, no webmaster needed
